Library Carpentry Workshop
for researchers from the humanities and cultural sciences and GLAM staff
As an official member of The Carpentries, HERMES is hosting the first Library Carpentry Workshop on November 7 & 8, 2024 online. The Carpentries is a non-profit organisation that provides researchers with basic skills in programming and data science through workshops.
What can you expect?
Library Carpentry is made by people working in library- and information-related roles to help you:
- automate repetitive, boring, error-prone tasks
- create, maintain and analyze sustainable and reusable data
- work effectively with IT and systems colleagues
- better understand the use of software in research
- and much more…
The workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of computing and provides you with a platform for further self-directed learning. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop.
Who can participate?
This workshop is aimed at students, doctoral candidates, postdocs from the humanities and cultural sciences as well as employees in GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums).
When and where?
The workshop will be held online via Zoom and will take place over two days, November 7 & 8, 2024, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. The workshop language is English.
What topics will be covered?
The workshop will cover the following topics in depth
- Tidy Data: How to efficiently create, format and organise tabular data
- The Unix Shell: Introduction to the command line
- Introduction to Git: Version control made easy
- OpenRefine: Data cleansing and transformation
Prerequisites for participation:
No prior knowledge of the tools mentioned is required for the workshop. Please make sure that you install the required software and tools on your computer in advance. All relevant information can be found in the setup instructions on the workshop website.

The number of participants is limited to 30 people, so secure your place early! Register using the registration form. Once you have registered, you will receive a Zoom link and further information by e-mail.
